Snoring occurs when the airways constrict during sleep.  There are several possible causes of this.  In some people, allergies lead to their airways narrowing.  For others, an environment with dry air affects the airways.  Infections may also cause congestion in the sinuses and respiratory tracts.  It is not unusual for people who are obese to be bothered with snoring either.  Another possible cause may also be an inflammation in the throat.

Thyme has many uses.  It can aid in the treatment of respiratory conditions.  At the same time, it can also fortify your body’s immune system.  It even helps alleviate muscle pains.  It’s been known to fight fungus and bacteria.  Aside from that, its scent helps calm the mind.

How to use essential oils for snoring

The most common methods for using essential oils are through a diffuser, steam inhalation or massage.  You may add a couple of drops of the oil to a diffuser or humidifier.  When using steam inhalation, you can also place several drops into a bowl with boiling water and breathe in the vapor.  If you wish to apply the oil via massage, mix it with a carrier oil first.

If snoring is due to inflammation

  • Tea tree
  • Rosemary
  • Lavender

Other than eucalyptus and thyme, you may also use other oils.  If suffering from inflammation, you can use oils with antibacterial properties.  Try tea tree, rosemary or lavender are all renowned for their inflammation-fighting abilities.

If snoring is triggered by congestion

  • Cedarwood
  • Peppermint

Some other oils that have the ability to clear the nasal airways are cedarwood and peppermint.  For inhalation, in addition to steam, you may also inhale the aroma directly by applying the oil conveniently on your handkerchief so you can use it anytime.  When massaging the oil, the best areas to apply it on are your neck, chest and back.

If snoring is caused by allergies

  • Lavender
  • Chamomile

Oils with antihistamine properties include lavender and chamomile.  These are best used via inhalation or a diffuser.
