5 Ways To Get Clear Skin Overnight

Even when you eat well, sleep enough and exercise, now and then we can all be prone to a break out. Frustratingly, this often happens right before a big event when you want to look your absolute best! But fear not, here are a few tried and test ways to get your skin back to its best overnight.

1. Wash Your Face

It may seem obvious but if you don't wash your face before bed, all of the dirt and sweat that builds up on your face during the day can quickly create spots. If you're guilty of going to bed with your make-up still on, think again. If you're too tired to move before bed, try having some face cleansing wipes by your bed.

You should also keep your skin well-hydrated [1]. After washing, apply a rich lotion that doesn't clog your pores. It can make a big difference to the overall look and texture of your skin. Dry skin is also more prone to wrinkles and aging.

2. Apply a Face Mask

You could make your own natural face mask from scratch, or buy a shop bought one such as a clay mask for penetrating deep into the skin and clearing out excess oil and bacteria. Here are two quick face masks you can make at home:

Try mixing cooked oatmeal, lemon juice and egg. The oatmeal contains antioxidants for bringing down swelling [2]. Acid in the lemon kills bacteria, and the egg contains vitamin E to tighten and smooth the skin.

Alternatively, whip up some strawberries and yogurt and apply it to the face to sooth, smooth and unclog.

3. Apply a Spot Treatment

Try a treatment containing sulfur and salicyclic acid. This kills any bacteria and cleans out the pores http://www.drugs.com/cdi/salicylic-acid-sulfur-lotion.html. Applied early, it can stop any budding blemishes in their tracks. Use after cleaning your face, and apply on a tip to avoid contaminating the area.

If you don't have any spot treatment, a non-gel toothpaste is also great for drying up spots. Add a dab before bed. Another good alternative is aspirin or baking soda. Dissolve a little aspirin or baking soda in some water, then apply the paste to the spot for five minutes before washing off.

4. Steam It Out

Hold your head over a bowl of hot water, allowing the steam to open the pores [3]. This can help to remove any dirt and oil in the pores without aggravating your skin. Follow steaming with a face mask for an even deeper cleanse.

5. Use Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is famous and powerful for treating wounds, scars and it can also help you clean up a break out quickly [4]. You can apply Aloe Vera as a juice or as a gel. Add it to the spots and let it dry completely before washing off.

However tempting it is, avoid picking and touching any spots. Not only can this lead to permanent scarring, it can also create further break outs as bacteria is spread around the face. It's not always possible to avoid spots, but if you do get the occasional break out, follow some of our steps above and watch those pimples disappear before you know it.
